Prevalence of menstruation disturbances and its relationship with quality of life in high school students in Qazvin city

Background: Menstruation disorders in female students in the early years of the menstrual cycle affect their physical, emotional and social functions. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of menstrual disorders among high school students in Qazvin city and its relationship with their quality of life. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 1000 female high school students in Qazvin city in the academic year 2017-2018. Then, menstrual cycle disorders and their effect on quality of life were evaluated. Data were collected through a checklist and quality of life questionnaires. Data were analyzed using independent t-test. Findings: The mean age of the population was 15.9±0.93 years. The most common disorder is premenstrual syndrome (PMS) with a frequency of ٪ 60. There was a significant relationship between the quality of life scores with PMS, menorrhagia, metorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, spotting, hypermenorrhea (P<0.001), polymenorrhea (P=0.005), hypomnorrhea (P=0.002) and amenorrhea (P=0.025). The quality of life scores of girls with these disorders were lower than girls who did not have menstrual disorders. Conclusion: The findings of the present study showed that menstrual disorders are highly prevalent among these students and have a significant impact on their quality of life. Since this impact has the potential to have longer-term consequences, further efforts to understand and address this issue may be necessary.
